September birthstone Jewelry: The Ultimate Shopping Guide

Introduction

There are many benefits about being born in September and we’re not just talking about being one of the eldest in your year at college (though that certainly did have its perks!). Here at Valley Rose, our favourite thing about September is, of course, the birthstone; the beautiful and radiant sapphire. We’re proud to be considered the home of September birthstones and are renowned for our stunning designs.

What are some fun facts about sapphires?

  • Many people associate sapphires with hues of blue but you may be surprised to discover that they can actually come in all the colours of the rainbow, including teal, green, pink, yellow and even orange

  • In ancient Greece, kings and queens believed sapphires could help protect you from harm. Some people still believe this today!

  • Sapphires are thought to be the stones of wisdom and serenity and are often used in meditation practice

  • They can be found all over the globe, with certain colours being especially rare

  • The scientific name of a sapphire crystal is called Corundum, which is an aluminium oxide mineral

Fun facts aside, if you’re in the market for september birthstone, there are some things you should be aware of when shopping for one:

  • You should always consider if the birthstone was sourced while maintaining ethical practices. Here at Valley Rose, we only produce ethical jewelry, which means all of our gemstones are sourced with the social and environmental impact in mind. We avoid conflict minerals, exploitative labour and encourage practices that prevent deforestation, soil erosion and water pollution.

  • Whether you’re buying the September birthstone for yourself or for someone special, the lifestyle of the wearer should be taken into account. For example, if you are frequently exposed to harsh chemicals or work in hot environment, there is a likelihood that the sapphire will eventually become damaged.

  • The 4 Cs matter. These are color, cut, clarity and carat and they will ultimately dictate the value of the birthstone. If the colour of the sapphire is especially bold or saturated, this is normally a positive indication when it comes to quality. The cut will affect how sparkly the stone is, the clarity gives an indication of the purity (with ‘flawless’ being the most valuable) and the carat is how much the stone weighs

  • Like we’ve previously mentioned, sapphires can come from all over the world. Their origin will give an indication on how rare the stone is and that usually means a higher price. For example, sapphires from regions such as Kashmir are well known for their intensity in colour and have become highly sought after in recent years. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, produce high quality stones that are slightly more affordable.

Choosing a September birthstone goes beyond just the sapphire, their versatility means they can be incorporated into a variety of jewelry pieces. Here at Valley Rose, we’ve collated our favourite pieces of jewelry that showcase sapphires in the best light.

Caring for Your Sapphire Jewelry

While sapphires may be extremely durable gemstones, they need to be looked after properly in order to maintain their beauty. Make sure you clean your sapphire jewelry with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth to avoid scratching or damaging the stone. Keep in mind that harsh chemicals can dull the surface of the gemstone so they are better off avoided. If you ever have to take your sapphire piece off, store it  in a soft pouch or box to prevent scratches from other jewelry.

Ultimately, September birthdays should be celebrated in style and what better way than with a unique, ethically sourced piece of jewelry that will withstand the test of time. Combining symbolic meaning, a rich history and mesmerising colours of which there is no close second, the September sapphire is the perfect birthday gift.
