Be gentle with softer stones like opals, turquoise, and pearls. Try to not beat them up and never wear them while working out, gardening or cooking.
For diamonds and sapphires they are safe to put in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner. Never put opal, pearls or turquoise in an ultrasonic, they will shatter.
Universal cleaning tip for all jewelry: clean with an old toothbrush and hot water and mild soap.
