Yes, actually now more than ever! We have so many issues in the jewelry industry from mine to market and we need to demand safer working conditions, environmental protection and fair pay for every stage of the jewelry process.
The term “conflict-free” doesn’t necessarily mean that the workers were paid fairly or have safe conditions or that the process didn’t massively pollute the environment. ”Conflict-free” means that the materials did not finance a civil war or conflict situation, which is super important but not a complete solution to the myriad of issues within the industry.
The extraction of gold and gemstones as a whole puts miners in tremendous risk. The majority of gold is mined from small scale mines and these communities are vulnerable to the negative effects of gold mining like mercury pollution, unfair pay, forced labor, and dangerous work environments. Fairmined gold is the only gold that ensures miners can flourish and be safe.
Unfortunately consumerism and the current production systems have made us used to paying for slave labor and consuming at unsustainable volumes. Jewelry and other ethically made or fairtrade goods that are fairly priced may give us sticker shock but really we should be consuming less anyways. Shopping ethical will help overbuying and make you love and cherish your purchases even more while also contributing to sustainable systems.
